A little bit about the artist..
Alexa is in the final stages of completing her master's of science degree in ecology at the University of Alberta.

She is studying cougars! Specifically, she is researching how human modified landscapes affect cougar mortality.

With this research she hopes to provide insight into improving the ways that humans and wildlife co-exist.
Here an adult female cougar has been tranquilized so the research team could put on a GPS collar. These collars last 1-2 years and then fall off naturally. By tracking her movements we can better understand their biology and how to insure their persistence on the landscape.

Once we have an adult female collared, sometimes we get lucky and can see when she has kittens! By looking at GPS clusters, we can identify where the nursery site may be. If we can find the site, we then fit the kittens with expandable GPS collars. Having these collars helps determine survival rate of the kittens and track their movements into adult-hood!
